Who we are

Connecting people to nature for health, every single day

About Healthy by Nature

We’re on a mission to make it easier for all Canadians to connect with nature, because time outside is essential for our well-being. By creating opportunities to experience the outdoors, we're improving health, inspiring joy, and growing stewardship.

The heart of it? Getting outside is one of the most powerful ways to improve your health—while inspiring us to protect the places we love.

Why we do it

Backed by hundreds of studies over several decades, research suggests that connecting to nature is one of the best things you can do to improve your health and the health of the planet.

Increasing life expectancy

Living closer to walkable green spaces helps you live longer—no matter what your age, general health or income is.

Inspiring pro-environmental behaviours

Spending time outdoors makes people more likely to make sustainable choices—because when you love nature, you protect it.

Easing stress & anxiety

Just 3–4 times a week outdoors can slash your chances of needing mental health meds by 33%.

Improving academic performance

Schools with more trees and greenery outside the classroom windows score higher on standardized tests and have better graduation rates.

Boosting job satisfaction

Research shows that time in nature boosts job satisfaction, productivity, and mental health. A happier workplace starts with getting outside.

Reducing health care costs

Access to nature saves $6 trillion annually in mental health costs globally.

Lowering risk of heart disease & stroke

Spending time in green spaces can lower your risk of chronic diseases including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

Programs

Creating meaningful connections to nature across Canada takes all of us—through schools, healthcare, and workplaces—working together to make time outside part of everyday life.

Learning by Nature

Students across Canada are leading projects to track, enhance, and steward biodiversity on their school grounds. Connecting to nature improves learning outcomes, supports student health, and empowers young people to protect their future.

By connecting kids to nature and real examples of nature conservation, we are fostering a culture of stewardship and building broad support for protected areas.

Enhance nature on your school ground

Nature at Work

Canadians spend nearly 100,000 hours at work in their lifetime. Integrating opportunities to connect to nature supports mental health, team building and kindness, and improves productivity at work.

Taking part in nature-based initiatives improves personal health while making a meaningful impact in the community.
